Tavia Yeung’s Older Sister Griselda Yeung Says She Feels “Useless” Compared To Tavia
There’s no escaping sibling rivalry , even when you’re famous.
While Hongkong actress Tavia Yeung, 41, is pretty much an A-lister in Hongkong, things are a little bit different for her older sister, Hongkong actress Griselda Yeung. The 42-year-old entered showbiz just two years after Tavia graduated from TVB’s acting class in 1999.
Tavia’s career took off after a few years of playing extras and supporting roles in dramas, and she was soon starring in blockbusters like Moonlight Resonance, Beyond The Realm Of Conscience and The Hippocratic Crush.
However, Griselda, who competed in Miss Hongkong 2001, found herself typecast, and constantly playing a widow or divorcee on television. She once shared that she was greatly affected by this, as it felt as if she could not move past these supporting roles.
Recently, TVB released a short clip of the two sisters sharing a moment together, soon after Tavia had bagged the much coveted Best Actress award in 2012 for her performance in Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles.
Griselda had stopped by to congratulate Tavia. However, when the topic changed to how Tavia has always supported their family, she couldn't help but to get emotional.
“All these years, Tavia has always been the pillar of our family, [we] relied on her for everything, regardless of whether it was a big or a small matter. It’s really a big regret of mine, and I know that I’m to blame. I'm the older sister, but as she’s achieved so much more in her career, she’s become so much stronger ‘cos she feels like she has to carry the family on her shoulders. Right now, I don’t have the ability [to do so], I can only take care of myself,” said Griselda.
She then added: “Sometimes, I’ll blame myself, I feel so useless [compared to Tavia]. Occasionally, when I’m unable to care for our mother, she’ll step up in my place, and I’m very thankful for her.”
According to reports, Tavia and Griselda’s father passed away when they were younger, leaving their mother as the family’s sole breadwinner. The family-of-three mainly survived on their mum’s income from doing odd jobs like giving out flyers, cleaning, and working as a service staff at a restaurant.
Later, when they grew older, Tavia and Griselda took on part-time jobs to lessen their mother’s load as well. When Tavia graduated in 1999, she joined TVB’s acting class in the hopes of providing for their family.
However, it seems like Griselda has largely managed to look past this insecurity. In a recent interview, the actress shared that while she still finds herself playing minor roles on television, she’s decided to be more optimistic about this.
“There's no such thing as balance when it comes to life, your rewards will not always be equal to how much you’ve sacrificed. We shouldn’t have such a narrow point of view. Our wins and losses aren’t something that can be calculated immediately. It’s natural to experience highs and lows in your life. As long as there’s still a single breath left in me, I will strive to survive, with the attitude that tomorrow will be a better day, and tons of positivity,” said Griselda.
