Tony Sun Claims 5566 Were Once Invited To Apply For Singapore Citizenship By “The Prime Minister’s Wife”

He didn’t name-drop anyone… but sure or not?

Singapore is a really popular place for overseas celebs to settle down or find a second home — just look at Vivian Hsu, Cecilia Cheung, Vicki Zhao, Gong Li, and Jet Li. But how often does one get a personal invitation to become a naturalised citizen?

Recently, 5566’s Tony Sun and Zax Wang made a guest appearance on variety show 36 Questions, where they chatted with hosts Aaron Yan, Sandy Wu, and Jesse Tang about all kinds of topics. While discussing their popularity outside of Taiwan thanks to their 2002 drama My MVP Valentine, Tony proudly shared about something that happened when the group visited Singapore to perform at a charity show and National Day celebration event.

According to Tony, the (then) Prime Minister’s wife had “strongly invited” the 5566 members to apply for Singapore citizenship, but they had dismissed the idea as there were too many factors to consider. He did not name names, but 5566 were in town to perform at a pre-National Day concert in 2004, so, if anything, the 42-year-old could have been referring to the wife of Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who was Singapore’s Prime Minister until August 12, 2004.

To be honest, we’re kinda having a hard time believing his story. Perhaps it was just a light-hearted quip that came up while engaging in friendly banter with the band?

Another tidbit Tony shared was about how he once dreamed of becoming a policeman, but he didn’t like to study so he didn’t sign up at the police academy. This led Zax to recall his old job selling mobile phones when he was still a struggling actor prior to joining 5566. At one point, the 40-year-old even considered giving up his showbiz career to start his own mobile phone business.

“If those plans had worked out, I would have launched Renfu (his Chinese name) Telecommunications by now,” he quipped, to which Tony retorted, “You’re a mobile phone shop boss who has been held back by an idol group.”

On that note, Sandy asked both of them if they could do it all over again, would they still choose to be celebrities? Without any hesitation, Tony replied, “No.”

“Why are there so many people examining our lives?” he wondered, adding that the intense scrutiny on his private affairs has also affected his family. However, his personal philosophy goes: “I can’t go back, so I will still try my best to spread positive energy and put on good performances until the very end.”

Zax, on the other hand, admitted that while he sometimes used to feel forced to do his job in the past, he has since realised that “being an entertainer is a blessing”, especially after meeting so many fans who found joy through their work. “Knowing that I occupy a little space in their lives and memories is something that I cherish very much.”
