The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (NC16)

Starring Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Ruairi O’Connor

Directed by Michael Chaves

In the third (3.5, if you count spin-off Annabelle Comes Home) Conjuring instalment based on the real-life cases of husband-and-wife paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, terrific), the couple lend their expertise to help a young man charged with murder, which he claimed was committed under the influence of the devil. Was he really possessed? Or was it totally something else? Whatever it is, can it be proven in a court of law? “The court accepts the existence of God every time a witness swears to tell the truth,” says a steely Ed Warren in one scene. “I think it’s about time they accept the existence of the devil.” This chapter — with Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona, once hyped as the extension of the Conjuring-verse
but not anymore) taking over directing duties from original helmer and franchise architect James Wan — steers away from the haunted-house formula and weaves in a refreshing detective element into the familiar spooky proceedings. It’s scary at parts (notably the opening exorcism sequence) but dials down on the oozing dread and nerve-wracking tension of its predecessors. The fright quality might have dipped but at least the Warrens’ continuing love story will still warm the cockles of your heart. (2.5/5 stars)

1 of 2 'Awake': Gina Rodriguez and Co. have trouble sleeping.

Awake (R21)

Starring Gina Rodriguez, Finn Jones, Jennifer Jason Leigh

Directed by Mark Raso

Whoo-hoo! Here’s a movie to catch every
World Sleep Day! Humanity faces extinction after a mysterious phenomenon deep-fries all electronics and robs every one’s ability to sleep. And you know what happens when we do not get adequate shuteye. Disorientation! Hallucination! Hysteria! Death! Gina Rodriguez plays a single mum with a checkered past who takes her two kids — one of them is a “sleeper” — on a road trip to the “Hub”, a military facility where a cure is being worked on. Along the way, they’d fight off all sorts of weirdos. The rest of it plays like a warmed-over Bird Box. (2.5/5 stars) On Netflix

  • 2 of 2 'Love Will Tear Us Apart': Zhang Jingyi and Qu Chuxiao trying to figure a way to get off the bus.

Love Will Tear Us Apart (PG13)

    Starring Qu Chuxiao, Zhang Jingyi

    Directed by Sha Mo

Qu Chuxiao and Zhang Jingyi play high school sweethearts trying to overcome insurmountable odds (parental disapproval, low-paying jobs, etc) to get hitched. Contrary to the title, love will never tear this couple apart, but the cost of a lavish wedding will — and it does (spoiler!). And let that be a lesson to all you soon-to-be newlyweds: Wanna save money (and headaches and heartaches)? Skip the wedding. (2.5/5 stars)
