Ghostbusters: Afterlife Director Jason Reitman Says His Director Dad Ivan Cried “Tears Of Joy” After Watching The New Sequel

Jason Reitman’s father, Ivan Reitman, burst into tears when he showed him the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel.

As reported in Empire magazine, Jason, 43, said: “My father hasn’t been leaving the house much because of COVID. But he took a test, put on a mask and drove down to the Sony lot to watch the movie with the studio. And after, he cried, and he said, ‘I’m so proud to be your father.’

“It was one of the great moments of my life.”

The older Reitman, 74, directed the 1984 original Ghostbusters and the 1989 sequel, which, interestingly, featured a cameo by an 11-year-old Jason as Brownstone Boy #2 . (He was one of the annoying kids at a party where the Ghostbusters were hired to entertain.)

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a direct sequel to Ghostbusters II and takes place in a different universe to Paul Feig’s 2016 all-female reboot.

In the Empire interview, Jason, who's best known for dramas like Juno and Up in the Air, admitted he was “really scared” about his foray into horror. He said: “The feeling that I’ve kind of held onto is that while it is very funny, it really scared me. It was really my first experience with a horror film.

“I was at a Directors Guild meeting and I happened to be sitting next to Steven Spielberg — when I told him I was working on Ghostbusters, he out of nowhere said, ‘Library Ghost — top ten scares of all time.’ And it’s true.”

Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard, Captain Marvels’ Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon, and Paul Rudd. It will also feature original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Sigourney Weaver.

The movie is slated to open here June 10 after its original July 2020 release was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
