Mission: Impossible — Fallout (PG13)

Starring Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Henry Cavill

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie

At the core of Fallout, the sixth Mission: Impossible movie is about how resident super-spy Ethan Hunt (again portrayed by franchise custodian Tom Cruise) has gone soft over the years.

He cares too much about the people around him, so much so that his emotional attachments are getting in the way of doing his job, an Achilles heel his enemies (like Sean Harris’ Solomon Lane, the villain in Rogue Nation, back to spread more anarchy) are only too eager to exploit.

Then again, you don’t come to a Mission: Impossible movie to see Cruise act petrified. No, siree, you pay good money to see Cruise act fearless, and you get to see plenty of that as he performs the kind of death-courting and gravity-defying stunts Jackie Chan used to do in the ’80s and ’90s — the kind that begs to be seen on the big screen. (The climactic chopper pursuit is easily the most exhilarating set-piece.)

All in all, Fallout is a thrilling mix of pathos, humour and action, with series newbie Henry Cavill having a field day as a formidable adversary. It’s the Man of Steel versus the Man of Steel Nerves, what’s not to like? (****)
