First, there were safe distancing ambassadors, then there were test swabbers and swab assistants. And now, digital ambassadors.

The Covid-19 pandemic has seen the creation of new jobs in Singapore. And if the latest hiring spree goes well, there’ll soon be hundreds of Digital Ambassadors imparting digital skills to seniors and hawkers.

Multiple job ads by various agencies to hire Digital Ambassadors have popped up online since May 27.

The primary job function of a digital ambassadors is to guide seniors and hawkers “on their digital learning journey”, state the job listings. Successful hires will impart basic digital skills to seniors in one-to-one or small group settings, or coach hawkers in adopting e-payment for their businesses. (Is this a sign that contactless or e-payments are here to stay, even as dining in may possibly eventually be allowed in Phase 2? Perhaps.)

According to the ads, digital ambassadors will earn anything from $1,800 to $2,100. Salaries vary according to the applicant’s highest qualifications. It’s an 11-month contract, and digital ambassadors will work in shifts, five days a week, including weekends and public holidays. Only Singaporeans are eligible. There are 1,000 vacancies available.

    Applicants should be good with technology, flexible with working hours, and have good communication skills, among other job skills criteria stated in the job listings. Experience in social services, community engagement or customer service is an advantage, as would be the ability to speak one or more dialects.
