Trailer Watch: Donnie Yen Fights The Flab And Gangsters In CNY Action-Comedy Enter The Fat Dragon
Gong Xi ‘Fat’ Choi, indeed!
Donnie Yen ditches his solemn Ip Man persona and embraces his sillier side in the upcoming Chinese New Year action-comedy Enter the Fat Dragon, which just dropped its trailer. The movie opens here Jan 23.
Yen dons a bodysuit — a la The Nutty Professor — as Fallon Chu, a Hongkong policeman struggling with obesity and heartbreak. Fallon may be 110kg but he can still move like Bruce Lee.
And for some reason, the chubby cop winds up in Japan where he makes a few new friends and fights off a bunch of unsavory characters. The trailer ends with Fallon showing off his nunchaku at the top of the Tokyo Tower.
Directed by Wong Jing (Chasing the Dragon), Enter the Fat Dragon is a loose remake of a 1978 Sammo Hung actioner of the same name. The star-studded cast includes Niki Chow, Teresa Mo, Louis Cheung, Jerry Lamb, and Chaney Lin.
Enter the Fat Dragon isn’t the only action flick vying for the CNY crowd. It’s up against Jackie Chan’s Vanguard; Dante Lam’s China Coast Guard-themed The Rescue, with Eddie Peng; and Will Smith-Martin Lawrence-starring Bad Boys for Life.
As of Dec 29, Ip Man 4: The Finale has earned $5.1 million at the local box-office since its Dec 19 launch. It still has a bit to go before beating Ip Man 3’s $7.65 million haul.
Enter the Fat Dragon opens in cinemas Jan 23; Ip Man 4: The Finale is still showing.
