Selena Lee Reveals Her Battle With Autoimmune Disease, Which She Says Has Affected Her Eyes

At the end of her IG post, the 41-year-old Hongkong actress, who is currently undergoing treatment, hashtagged thyroid disease.

Hongkong actress Selena Lee’s new TVB drama Barrack O'Karma 1968 is premiering next week but instead of joining her fellow cast members like Joel Chan in promoting the show, she’s taking time off for one very serious reason: She’s not well.

Yesterday (Mar 31), the 41-year-old shared a video on Instagram to talk about what she’s been through.

According to Selena, she started having eye problems in September last year.

“It’s why some of you have noticed that I haven’t worked since then,” she said, adding that she's shooting the video in the middle of her “IV treatment”.

Towards the end of 2021, she even went for an eye operation under the advice of her doctor in hopes that it would it resolve the issue. Sadly, the problem still persisted.

“In fact, the operation was not related to my sickness,” she sighed.

In February, Selena saw another eye specialist who ran a set of different tests on her. “[We did] Blood tests, MRI and different scans, in the end they found out that what I had is very complicated,” she said, revealing that she was diagnosed with autoimmune disease.

Selena also compared herself to Jada Pinkett Smith, who has famously opened up about her struggles with alopecia, which is also an autoimmune disease.

While alopecia causes hair loss, for Selena, who hashtagged #thyroiddisease at the end of her post, it's her eyes that are affected.

“I was very sad when I read about what Jada is going through, we’re both women, so this situation is really unfortunate. This disease has really affected my eyes, for example, they become very sensitive easily, to the point where it was impossible for me to work,” she said.

“As an artiste, not being able to work, and not knowing when you can work, makes me very sad,” Selena added.

She’s now undergoing treatment and says she can feel her condition getting better. However, she says her immunity is greatly weakened during the treatment period and so, if she unfortunately contracts COVID-19, there’s a high chance she would fall severely ill.

It explains why she’s now extra cautious about where she goes and has no choice but to pass up on promoting Barrack O'Karma 1968.

Here’s wishing Selena a speedy recovery.
