Harry Potter author JK Rowling recently sparked backlash when she questioned Taiwanese boxer Lin Yuting’s gender and eligibility to compete in the Paris Olympics.

Yuting, along with fellow boxer Imane Khelif of Algeria, was previously disqualified from the world championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) last year for failing gender eligibility tests.

Rowling, who is openly against the transgender community, said the 28-year-old boxer was part of the “insanity” of trans athletes competing in women’s sport, despite Yuting being born female.

The author has been widely criticised for her comments, with Shang-Chi star Simu Liu saying he “very much dislikes what she’s become”.

It all started when Buzzfeed posted on Threads asking users which celebrities they used to be a fan of but not anymore.

Simu responded naming Rowling and condemned her “dangerous anti-trans rhetoric” which has affected people in his life.

"So, yeah, love Harry Potter, hate cyberbullying, but very much dislike what she’s become," he wrote.

His post quickly garnered 11,000 likes, with many netizens appreciating that he spoke up against Rowling.

Yuting is now looking to clinch Taiwan's first gold medal in boxing after beating Turkey's Esra Yildiz Kahraman in the women's 57kg semifinal. She now faces Poland’s Julia Szeremeta in the final.
