Tom Cruise has seen The Flash and he approves of it: It is 'everything you want in a movie'

Tom Cruise has seen the upcoming superhero movie The Flash and he couldn’t get enough of it.

The Ezra Miller-starring movie, one of the last few DC titles made by the previous regime before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the studio as co-CEOs and co-chairmen last October,  doesn’t open in cinemas until June  — or April if you’re a theatre owner attending CinemaCon — and already it has a few fervent supporters inside the studio, including Gunn (who called it “probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made”) and Warner Bros Discovery CEO and Batgirl killer David Zaslav.

Now add another fan to that list: Tom. Friggin’. Cruise.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Cruise had a meeting with Zaslav in February and during that powwow, Zaslav revealed how excited he was about The Flash. Whatever Zaslav said, it got Cruise’s attention and he requested to see it. Zaslav said okay and a copy of the movie was dispatched to Cruise.

Citing an insider, THR said a Warners employee brought The Flash to Cruise’s Beverly Hills home and stayed until the avid onscreen runner and cinema savior — whose Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 1 opens a month after The Flash — finished watching the movie, said to be about two and a half hours long.

When Cruise was done, the movie was handed back to the messenger, who returned it to the studio pronto.

But here’s the fun part.

The Cruiser was so enthusiastic about The Flash that he cold-called the director, Andy Muschietti, and gushed over the movie. According to insiders, Cruise said something to the effect that the movie is “everything you want in a movie” and “this is the kind of movie we need now.”

Now, this is scary: someone actually overheard that exchange?

Geez, did Cruise speak to Muschietti over speakerphone? Or was Cruise screaming into the phone a la that ‘Show me the money’ moment from Jerry Maguire? Or maybe it’s time Cruise run a background check on his staff?  In any case, we just hope the messenger was served snacks and beverages and had free wi-fi while waiting.

We can totally see the intrepid Warners marketing team printing “Approved by Tom Cruise!” on The Flash poster, right above critic’s quotes from Geek Culture and The Straits Times (if you haven’t noticed, 8days doesn’t do many reviews these days, so we’ll just admire from afar). Can you see it?

The Flash sees Miller’s Barry Allen/Scarlet Speedster trying to alter the past to save his mother, only to mess up the present where General Zod (Michael Shannon) returns to raise hell on Earth. Don’t worry, though. Barry has Batman (Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck), another Barry from another dimension, and Supergirl (Sasha Calle) on his side. 

The Flash opens in cinemas on June 15 while Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 1 arrives on July 13.
