Trailer Watch: James Cameron Returns To Pandora In Avatar: The Way Of Water

Prepare to put on those 3D glasses again.

Welcome back to Pandora!

After nearly 13 years and countless delays, James Cameron has finally unveiled footage from his long-awaited sequel to 2009’s Avatar, aka the highest-grossing film of all time, due in Singapore cinemas on Dec 15. (It opens on Dec 16 in the US.)

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family — Jake (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and their kids — and the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive and the tragedies they endure.

If Avatar shows viewers the jungles and mountains of Pandora, the follow-up will take them to the planet’s oceans. The 97-sec teaser trailer sees the Na’vi tribe interacting with aquatic creatures resembling whales and pelicans. It will definitely look more spectacular in 3D. Yes, those 3D glasses.

All in all, it feels like you are watching a National Geographic documentary, but with a lot of action and explosions. (FYI: The director of Terminator is also Explorer-at-Large with National Geographic.) The Way of Water – said to cost about US$250 million (S348 mil) – is the first of four sequels; the others are slated for Dec 2024, Dec 2026, and Dec 2028.

Speaking at the recent CinemaCon in a pre-recorded video, Cameron said the new films are “pushing limits even farther with high frame rate, higher resolution 3D and greater reality in our visual effects. I wanted our return to Pandora to be something really special. Every shot is designed for the biggest screen, highest resolution, and most immersive 3D available. I think we pulled it off.”

Avatar: The Way of Water also stars Kate Winslet, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Yeoh, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco and Jemaine Clement. Before the sequel opens, the original Avatar will be re-released on Sept 22. So if you have never seen that movie on the big screen, here’s your chance.
