Trailer Watch: Meet Ms Marvel, Marvel Studios’ First Muslim Superhero

Partly filmed in Thailand, ‘Ms. Marvel’ will bow on Disney+ on June 8.

Marvel Studios is making history with Ms. Marvel, its first series led by a Muslim superhero. The studio just dropped the trailer for the six-part series slated to launch on Disney+ on June 8.

Created by Sana Amanat, G Willow and Adrian Alphona, Kamala’s version of Ms Marvel — there are three earlier iterations, dating back to 1968 — debuted in Marvel Comics in 2013. (To be fair, rivals DC introduced their first Muslim superhero, Zari Tomaz — played by Iranian actress Tala Ashe — in Legends on Tomorrow back in 2017.)

Bisha K Ali, the head writer on the Mindy Kaling-produced Four Weddings and a Funeral series remake and a staff scribe on Loki, is the showrunner, with four directors including Bad Boys For Life helmers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.

According to Variety, four episodes of Ms. Marvel were filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, while two were shot in Thailand in Apr-May 2021. The latter took place at the Studio Park facilities, about an hour’s drive from Bangkok.

Judging from the trailer footage, it isn’t clear — it’s usually the case — how Kamala’s struggles with her newfound powers fit into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whatever it is, Vellani will reprise her role in The Marvels, the Captain Marvel sequel premiering in Feb 2023, where she’ll join Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau.
