Trailer Watch: Natalie Portman Wields Mjölnir As The New Thor In Thor: Love And Thunder

Chris Hemsworth is back as the Nordic God in his fourth solo adventure, again directed by Taika Waititi.

Thor the God of Thunder is having a bit of an existential crisis.

This is revealed in the first teaser for Thor: Love and Thunder, with Chris Hemsworth back in the fourth Thor Odinson-centred movie, helmed by Taika Waititi, who was behind 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok.

The movie picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame with a beer-bellied Thor handing the reins of New Asgard over to Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) while he hangs with the Guardians of the Galaxy (Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper).

But after a few adventures, ennui sets in and Thor thinks it’s time to hang up his superhero spurs and embark on a journey of self-discovery. “I need to figure out exactly who I am,” he says, as Guns N’ Roses’ ‘Sweet O’ Mine’ plays on the soundtrack.(FYI: That song turns 35 this year!)

This is where Thor and his bud rock gladiator Korg (mo-cap performed by Waititi himself) encounter a host of new characters — including Christian Bale’s main villain Gorr the God Butcher, Russell Crowe’s Zeus the Olympian God, and Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone as Asgardian stage actors.

Thor also meets a familiar face from his past: one-time love Jane Foster, again played by Natalie Portman. But this Jane is different: she is wielding Mjölnir, the mighty hammer which was destroyed by Thor’s half-sister Hela (Cate Blanchett) in Ragnorak. Come again?

Written by Waititi and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, Love and Thunder is based on Jason Aaron’s run on the comic book The Mighty Thor, where Jane takes up the mantle of Thor after Mjölnir deemed its previous holder unworthy and stripped him of his powers. Jane’s newfound power comes at a price, though: every time she uses the hammer, it exacerbates her breast cancer.

Still confused? How does this twist fit in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe? Is this new Jane the result of the multiverse debacle in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which will be dealt more with in next month’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

We’ll know for sure when Thor: Love and Thunder opens in cinemas July 7. Sharing the teaser on his socials, Hemsworth wrote, "All the feels of a classic Thor adventure. Big, loud and Crazy and full of heart. You’ll laugh you’ll cry, then you’ll laugh so much you’ll cry some more!!"
