Unusual Yong Tau Foo Stall Opens From 1.30am For Supper-Goers, Attracts Long Queues

You can swing by for makan here after your New Year countdown tonight.

It is the last day of 2022, and most folks would have plans to do a countdown to 2023 tonight. If you predict that you will be feeling peckish after all the partying, there’s a yong tau foo stall that may sate your supper craving. Photo: Teck Sheng

It opens at 1.30am

Called Special Yong Tau Foo, it is located at North Bridge Road Food Centre. What is unusual about this stall is that it opens at… 1.30am. Yes, you read that right.

Despite its unconventional opening hours, the stall has a large following and is a popular supper spot. One can’t miss its bright yellow signboard and long line of hungry customers who show up even before the stall opens, waiting patiently to choose their yong tau foo.

“People are still coming to form a longer queue”

Netizen Teck Sheng shared his YTF supper run on Facebook group Can Eat! Hawker Food. In his post, he stated that he was at the stall on “Sat morning 1.20am” when there was already a line, and that “people are still coming to form a longer queue.”

He also posted a photo of his meal, which was a “big portion at $11” including fish paste-stuffed brinjal, chilli, pig’s intestines, fish cake, fishball and fried wonton. There are also other ingredients offered like stuffed bittergourd and lady’s finger, and more fried grub such as tau pok and fish paste wrapped in beancurd skin.

Each item costs $0.60 (but cuttlefish costs $1.20 apiece). There is a minimum order of at least six pieces. You can top up $0.60 to get white rice or bee hoon for your yong tau foo, which is served either dry with a red sweet sauce and chilli sauce, or in a light clear broth.

There’s a whole queue strategy

The stall’s opening hours are listed as 2am to 9am, though Special’s regulars turn up at 1am to get the choicest picks. Teck Sheng tells 8days.sg: “2am is not correct… You will be waiting in the queue. So far I got in [first five in line], started [queuing] before 1.30am. You can try to get there and sit nearby from 1am, they will open once ready.”

According to Teck Sheng, the line is not a deterrent as “the queue is moving okay, so [even if you join the queue at] 1.30am also no problem.” How’s that for your first meal of 2023?

Special Yong Tau Foo is at #01-87 North Bridge Road Food Centre, 861 North Bridge Rd, S198783. Open daily except Mon, 1.30am-9am or till sold out.
