What Happened To Hollywood, The Bedok Dessert Stall With Long Queues For Its Chendol?

The stall was named after its original location at Hollywood Theatre, and had a quirky signboard emblazoned with Pink Panther and a cartoon tiger’s head.

Residents of Bedok would have heard of Hollywood. No, not the showbiz mecca, but a very popular dessert stall at the old Bedok Interchange Food Centre, which had a loyal customer base for its chendol, ice jelly and ice kacang.

Fans of the refreshing desserts have raved about the generous portions and great taste. This inevitably led to perpetual queues at the stall, which had a memorable old-school signboard emblazoned with a cartoon tiger’s head and Pink Panther.

Hollywood was named after its original location at Hollywood Theatre at Tanjong Katong Road, where its hawker-owners ran a pushcart serving sweet treats to cinema-goers. The family-run stall eventually shifted to Bedok Interchange (the theatre closed for good in 1995). Photo: Yelp/ Huiyin S.

The stall quietly disappeared

To the regulars’ dismay, Hollywood also quietly closed just before its hawker centre underwent a major revamp in 2014. Some customers were unaware of the closure, with netizens enquiring online about the hawkers’ whereabouts.

One such query surfaced on Facebook foodie group Hawkers United in 2021, when netizen Nicole Foo asked: “Hello... Anyone knows of this Hollywood Chendol [at] Bedok Interchange Hawker Center before they renovated? Any idea where they moved to or have they shut down permanently?”

She received a response from fellow group member Anna Lee, who said: “My family knows them personally. They have retired already. I miss their chendol too.” Photo: Hon Yi Chen Terence

Hawkers had wanted to teach family friend how to make chendol

According to Anna, the hawkers had wanted to teach her older sister how to make their famous chendol. “But my sis rejected that time ’cos she [had a] full-time job,” Anna explained.

She added: “I was very young then so they wanted to teach my [older] sis. Now [the hawkers] are both very old and I have no idea if they are able to teach. If they do, I’m more than willing to learn and perhaps open a stall in the future.”

8days.sg’s attempts to contact Hollywood’s hawker-owners were unsuccessful.
