SINGAPORE — Picking up three awards yesterday (Oct 26), Anthony Chen’s Ilo Ilo winning streak shows no signs of stopping. The multi award-winning family drama continues to fly Singapore’s flag all around the world, this time picking up Best Feature Film and the FIPRESCI (The International Federation of Film Critics) prize at the 43rd Molodist International Film Festival in Kiev, Ukraine. Just after the awards ceremony, where Director Chen was in attendance, team Ilo Ilo received news that they also won the Best Narrative Feature at the 22nd Philadelphia Film Festival in the United States. “Three awards in a day, what a weekend!” Chen told TODAY over the phone from Kiev.” I wanted to come to Kiev because two of my shorts played here — G-23 in 2005 in the student short competition and Ah Ma in 2007 in the main short film competition — so I’ve always been curious about the festival. “And now it comes full circle for my first feature to play here in the feature film competition and even more amazing to be rewarded here.” So with 14 awards under its belt and counting, what are Ilo Ilo’s chances of being the first Singaporean film to be nominated for (and possibly win) an Oscar? “Oh! Not thinking about the Best Foreign Picture Oscar,” said Chen. “I feel that it’s a long shot! “Though a Russian critic told me he has bets on Ilo Ilo to be an Oscar nominee,” he revealed with a laugh. “I told him that he will lose his money!” Ilo Ilo is in next in competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil and Stockholm, Sweden. But all eyes are on the upcoming Golden Horse Awards, where the film is nominated for six awards in major categories, including for Best Film, Best New Director and Best Actress for Yeo Yann Yann. “I’m rooting for Yann Yann,” said Chen. “I think she deserves it.” Ilo Ilo is in Singapore cinemas until Oct 30.
