SINGAPORE — If you’ve been waiting for the continuation of the inFAMOUS series, your wait is almost over: Sony announced yesterday (March 6) that inFAMOUS Second Son will be released in Singapore Mar 21, together with some pre-order exclusives and details about the special items for the collector’s edition.
Unlike previous games in the series, inFAMOUS Second Son now focuses on a new character, Delsin, and this time the game is no longer based in the fictional Empire City, but in Seattle. With Delsin you do most of your normal attacks with a chain attached to your arm, and just like the previous main character Cole, Delsin is a Conduit — meaning he can channel superpowers.
The demo we tried started off with Delsin having to make a decision to be good or bad with another conduit named Fetch — the former will have you taking down drug dealers, and the latter will involve taking down various anti-Conduit protests around the town.
The inFAMOUS Karma system will play a part in how your character’s story evolves. Delsin’s powers are new too: He can use neon powers (absorbed from the neon lights around Seattle), which allow you to run extra fast and directly up buildings, and smoke powers (from vents damaged cars) which allow you to traverse vents, fences and float through the air for short distances. Both also are meant to feature different capabilities in combat, but during the demo they didn’t seem too different.
Still, movement and combat were beautiful, especially when you have neon lights flashing as you fire at enemies or just running around. Seattle, all rainy and dreary, is brought to life by the team at Sucker Punch, who are actually based in Seattle. Graphically speaking, you can tell the game is making full use of the PlayStation 4: While there were one or two jitters at the beginning, the game looked great and fluid.
The battle is fluid too: You will be spending most of your time firing at enemies and there’s a lot of fun in being able to chain your attacks together. Still, the frenetic motion means that things can go out of control for moments, and the game isn’t as dependent on combos as, say, Batman: Arkham City, which means that right now it doesn’t feel like I could say it’s poetry in motion. It’s fun, sure, but it’s hard to tell if the combat is inFAMOUS will help it be a great game. We’ve only seen two of Delsin’s many possible powers too, so it’ll be interesting to see how the rest of it plays out.
Still, developers Sucker Punch know how to make a good game, so it’ll be fun to see how inFAMOUS Second Son turns out. If you can’t wait, you can always put in your pre-order now, which will get you four exclusive vests for Delsin. Initial orders will also get the Cole Legacy’s DLC — which bridges the story between the second game and this game, and the Legendary Vest, which gives Delsin a more Cole-like appearance.
For fans, there’s also a Collector’s Edition, which comes with a beanie hat, pin badges, a woven patch and vinyl stickers. Loved the first two games but don’t have a PlayStation 4? You can always get the PlayStation 4 Bundle Pack.
You can also get the download version of the game, which will net you the exclusive vests and the initial DLC, as long as you buy the game before April 3.
inFAMOUS Second Son will be released for PlayStation 4 on March 21. The disc version of the Standard Edition will retail at S$69.90, while the download version will retail for S$63. PlayStation Plus members who purchase the download version before April 3 will get 10 per cent off the retail price. The Collector’s Edition will retail for S$89.90, and the PlayStation Bundle Pack will retail at S$699.
