LOS ANGELES — One of the surprises coming out at the recent E3 was developer Telltale Games announcing the release of a new DLC for season one of their award-winning episodic adventure game, The Walking Dead. Many had instead expected them to reveal more about their upcoming adaptation of the hit comic book series Fables.

The Walking Dead, also based on a hit comic book (and also television) series The Walking Dead, left fans hungry for more after the end of season one. Season one revolved around the story of Clementine, the young girl which the protagonist you played, Lee Everett, was protecting after the zombie apocalypse started. But with the release of 400 Days gamers hoping to know more of Clementine’s fate won’t get their prayers answered: 400 Days is a DLC featuring five new stories taking place in The Walking Dead’s universe, each focusing on a new character and their perspectives.

400 Days aims to bridge the stories of seasons one and two, and what ties it all together is a truck stop that gets changed over 400 days. The story for each character, however, doesn’t all take place across the 400 days, with each of them weaving in and out of each other, and ending, at different points. The stories also aren’t linear — you can choose whose story you wish to start with.

During a recent play-through at E3, I got to take a look at one of the five stories. This story, which actually starts before the zombie invasion, focuses on a man named Vince, and like in previous games you’re thrown right into the deep end of the action. The story quickly cuts to during the zombie invasion, and like previous Walking Dead instalments, the swearing, violence and, most importantly, moral choices return as you’re forced to make tough decisions as the timer goes down. It’s definitely more of the same good stuff as the original episodes (writer of Vince’s story, Gary Whitta, also worked on episode four of the original series), and I’ve got to say that watching the short playthrough was enough to get me hooked on The Walking Dead game all over again.

What whetted the appetite further was how decisions in the original episodes will actually carry over to this game — it’ll be interesting to revisit the decisions I’ve made in the past episodes. Even better: Decisions made in 400 Days will also carry over to season two.

If you haven’t played The Walking Dead, now’s the best time to sink your teeth into it. The afore-mentioned dynamic of Lee and Clementine precedes the older-man-younger-girl relationships seen in recent games — such as between Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth from BioShock Infinite, and Joel and Ellie from The Last Of Us — by months, and explores the dynamic, together with the horror that is the zombie apocalypse in wonderful ways.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days (Season One DLC) has been released on the PlayStation Network (United States). Gamers on PC and Mac will be able to get the DLC on July 3 in the United States (today, Singapore time), while Xbox Live gamers will have to wait till July 5 in the US. The release for iOS devices will be on July 11, US time. The price of the 400 Days will be the same as previous episodes for season one of The Walking Dead.
