The eco-friendly R32 air-conditioner range lets you programme pre-set functions, issue voice commands and turn off the unit remotely.

Climate change is causing Singapore to heat up, and many have turned to the use of air-conditioning to stay cool. But air-conditioning accounts for 19 per cent of Singapore’s carbon emissions, with household air-conditioners contributing 2 per cent in total.

The National Environment Agency has announced that from October onwards, it will be phasing out air-conditioning equipment that uses refrigerants with high Global Warming Potential (GWP) – such as R-410A – in favour of lower GWP options like R-32.

According to Ms Swen Tan, sustainability chairperson at Daikin Air Conditioning (Singapore), R-32 is a more sustainable choice compared to R-410A as it is a single-component refrigerant that allows for easier reclamation. “R-32 has a lower GWP of 675, compared to the blended refrigerant R-410A’s GWP of 2,088,” she added.

Besides having a lower GWP, R-32 air-conditioners require less refrigerant compared to the older R-410A models, thus further paring greenhouse gas emissions. A smaller refrigerant charge also means that components of the air-conditioner, such as the heat exchangers, do not need to be as large as before, thus reducing the weight of the unit. In addition, R-32 does not contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer.

To meet home, office and commercial needs, Daikin has one of the widest R-32 air-conditioning series in the market, including the Ezi SeriesSmart Envi Series and Skyair R-32 Series.

For families with young children as well as first-time homeowners, Daikin recommends the iSmile Eco Series, which boasts Singapore’s highest energy efficiency rating of five ticks. This means the air-conditioner can achieve a high cooling capacity and the desired temperature quickly, offering energy savings and minimising a household’s carbon footprint. What’s more, it comes with a PM2.5 filter to enhance the quality of indoor air, keeping your home cleaner and healthier.

TAKE SMART CONTROL OF YOUR AIR-CON

As you do your best to live more sustainably, you can enjoy greater convenience as well. Some of the air-conditioners in Daikin’s R-32 range, such as the iSmile Eco and Ezi Series, are equipped with smart control features.

Users of these series can control their air-conditioners any time and from anywhere, via the Daikin Mobile Controller app on their smartphones. This means that if you’ve forgotten to switch off the air-conditioner, you can still do so without having to return home.

Got your hands full with chores or busy with the kids? The app’s voice control function is compatible with both Google Home and Amazon Alexa, allowing you to operate Daikin’s air-conditioners with just your voice. Commands can be as simple as “Okay Google, turn on the AC in the living room” or more specific like “Okay Google, set the living room to 25 degrees”.

And when you’re not around to issue commands or check the app, you can programme pre-set functions for different days and times.

“The Smart Control features come with error notifications, vacation mode and a weekly schedule,” said Ms Tan. “The weekly schedule allows for up to six actions to be programmed for each day of the week. You can schedule not just the on and off function, but also your preferred temperature. Once the weekly timer is set up, the air-conditioner operates each day without requiring remote control input, giving you more convenience.”

GREENING THE FUTURE OF COOLING, WITH TECHNOLOGY

Daikin’s dedication to pioneering innovations in air-conditioning technology that benefit both users and the environment is part of the company’s sustainability charter.

Said Ms Tan: “Daikin is the only air-conditioner manufacturer to produce both air-conditioning equipment and refrigerant. As a refrigerant manufacturer, we have a responsibility to expand the use of substances with zero ozone layer depletion and to reduce greenhouse gases. As an equipment manufacturer, we believe we must work to reduce carbon emissions throughout the entire product life cycle.”

With the iSmile Eco Series and a comprehensive range of R32 air-conditioning options, Daikin is spearheading the way towards a cooler, more sustainable future for generations to come.
