A cordless vacuum cleaner sounds suspiciously like a compromise between convenience and power, and for many years, that’s exactly what many battery-powered vacuum cleaners were.

Dyson is upending that narrative with the new Dyson Cyclone v10, which makes the most of its advanced digital motor and battery pack to deliver a first-rate vacuuming experience.

POWER PLAY

According to its founder James Dyson, the v10 digital motor is so sophisticated and powerful that it has stopped developing corded vacuum cleaners altogether.

In terms of power-to-weight ratio, the v10 registers a 200-per-cent improvement over the v2, Dyson’s first-generation digital motor, and when it comes to suction force, it boasts a 20-per-cent improvement over its predecessor, the v8.

Building on technologies that stem from the latest in aerospace engineering, the v10 spins at an incredible 125,000 rpm – making it the fastest digital motor created for use outside a laboratory. This is a lot of force to handle, so the company constructed a ceramic shaft that is three times harder than steel but only half as dense. With the creative use of lightweight and resilient materials, the motor is now smaller and lighter – in fact, it’s almost half the weight of the v8.

Under the hood of the Cyclone v10 lay seven-cell lithium-ion batteries that promise to deliver up to 60 minutes of consistent, fade-free performance. This means the suction power starts strong and stays strong, so you can clean the whole house at one go.

DESIGN DONE RIGHT

Power and power-to-weight ratio are only parts of an equation aimed at solving the age-old daily cleaning problem. The other salient parts of this can be summed up in a couple of words: Compelling design.

This is where being a “stick vacuum", as Dyson puts it, comes in handy – literally. Dyson’s engineers rotated the 14 cyclones and the bin assembly by 90 degrees, putting everything into a single axis, vastly improving airflow efficiency to generate over 79,000G. This innovative in-line format also allows a hygienic point-and-shoot bin-emptying mechanism for ease of use. Trapped dust and debris are ejected swiftly into the large-capacity bin, not on the floor.

Adding to the compelling in-line design philosophy is an intuitive LED display that lets you know the filter and battery status at a glance, as well as a trigger activation system that eliminates the need for an on/off switch.

Dyson has also reimagined filtration as a whole-machine process, wrapping both pre- and post-motor filters around the motor as a single sealed unit. As a result, 99.97 per cent of particles as small as 0.3 microns, including dust and allergens, are captured by the system, giving you cleaner air.

The design overhaul extends the benefits of a vacuum cleaner, making it ideal for both hard surfaces and carpets. The cleaner head touts a powerful motor located inside the brush bar that drives stiff nylon bristles deep into carpet pile to remove dirt and pet hair. Large debris and fine dust from hard floors are easily dispatched with the soft-roller cleaner head and soft, anti-static carbon fibre filaments.

At the same time, it is easier than ever to use the device in the car, on sofas, and even mattresses – the v10 transforms into a handheld with just one click.

Thanks to sound acoustic engineering, the v10 is able to absorb vibrations and reduce turbulence at high rotational speeds. The result? A quieter cleaning experience.

It is all these advantages that have convinced Dyson to never again make a corded vacuum cleaner. So, if you’re in the market for a powerful vacuum cleaner that won’t trip you up with its treacherously twisty cord, get the Dyson Cyclone v10.
