SINGAPORE – United States banking giant Citi today (Oct 7) announced the appointment of Singaporean Lee Lung Nien as chief executive of its wholly-owned Malaysian subsidiary, Citibank Berhad.

Mr Lee, a 24-year veteran with the bank, will be responsible for Citi’s franchise in Malaysia, which includes its Institutional Clients Group, Consumer Banking, Cards and Wealth Management businesses. He will report to Mr Michael Zink, Citi’s Head of ASEAN.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr Lee was the Regional AML Business Head based in Malaysia. AML is an industry abbreviation for anti-money laundering. Mr Lee, who joined Citi in 1990 as a credit analyst in London, was chief operating officer for Citi Singapore in 2010.

“Malaysia is a strategic market for Citi… Lung’s extensive industry and management experience coupled with his thorough understanding of the local market will be instrumental in driving our ambitions and plans to build an even stronger and sustainable Citi franchise for the benefit of our clients,” Mr Zink said.

Citibank, which has been in Malaysia since 1959, now employs 6,400 people in the country. It is the only foreign bank to be rated AAA by Rating Agency Malaysia for 14 consecutive years, Citi said.
