Grease | 4.5/5

SINGAPORE — Even if, for some inexplicable reason, you have not watched the 1978 John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John classic movie, you’ll probably recognise the songs from the musical the film was based on. We’re talking about radio mainstays such as You’re The One That I Want, Greased Lightning and Summer Lovin’ — all of which were brought to life when Grease kicked off its run at the Grand Theatre at Marina Bay Sands Friday night.

Set in the ’50s, the musical revolves around high school students Danny and Sandy, who meet during their summer holiday. Danny, the apparent epitome of cool, has to deal with peer pressure, among other things, when he wants goody-two-shoes Sandy to be his girl. It is teenage love set to great music.

The musical opens with Principal Lynch teaching the audience the lyrics to We Go Together on a chalkboard. It was meant to be a short exercise to warm up the crowd, but judging from the enthusiastic response — and their outfits for the night — the audience were already good to go. Many were dressed for the occasion, with some men doing their T-Birds best in black leather jackets, while the ladies showed off Pink Ladies style with high-waisted skirts and scarves around their necks.

The audience (including this guilty writer) accompanied the Australian cast throughout the show, not just singing along to all the songs but also reciting the script by heart — particularly when it came to the now-famous line: “Tell me about it ... stud.”

As a massive fan of the movie, it was an awesome night out at the theatre. Sure, it wasn’t Travolta and Newton-John doing the Hand Jive on prom night, but it’s never dull when the gang gets together. You could say it’s like ramma lamma lamma ka dinga da dinga dong. Naadiah Bte Mohamad Munir Badib
