SINGAPORE – Singapore publisher Epigram Books has been shortlisted for the Bologna Prize for the Best Children’s Publishers of the Year, which will be presented at the 53rd Bologna Children’s Book Fair next month.

The Bologna Prize for the Best Children’s Publishers of the Year, now in its fourth year, rewards creative, innovative publishers based on “the editorial projects, professional skills and intellectual qualities of work produced by publishing houses all over the world”.

Epigram Books, which was started in 2011, is Singapore’s largest independent publisher and currently publishes an average of 30 to 40 titles every year. These include novels, short stories, plays, children’s books and some poetry.

Popular titles include the recent bestselling graphic novel The Art Of Charlie Chan Hock Chye and Amanda Lee Koe’s Ministry Of Moral Panic. The children’s books in its catalogue include Maranna Chan’s The Triple Nine Sleuths; Patrick Yee’s Harry picture book series, which tells the story of the life of Singapore’s first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew; and the bestselling The Diary Of Amos Lee series by author Adeline Foo (which has sold a total of 240,000 copies to date). Epigram Books has also translated and republished 13 international titles under their “Stories from Around the World” series of picture books.

Six prizes shall be awarded, one for each geographical area: Asia, Africa, Central-South America, Europe, North America and Oceania. Others in the Asian shortlist are Kaisei-Sha Publishing, One Stroke and Bronze Publishing from Japan; and Kalimat from the United Arab Emirates.

“We are humbled and honoured to be nominated this year,” said Edmund Wee, publisher and CEO of Epigram Books. “We hope to do Singapore proud.”
