Golden Point Award 2015 winners announced

SINGAPORE — The country’s emerging writers were in the spotlight at the 12th edition of the Golden Point Award, with a total of 43 winners from two categories — short story and poetry — in the country’s four major languages (English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil).

SINGAPORE — The country’s emerging writers were in the spotlight at the 12th edition of the Golden Point Award, with a total of 43 winners from two categories — short story and poetry — in the country’s four major languages (English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil).

The winning works, which were announced yesterday at a ceremony held in conjunction with the ongoing Singapore Writers Festival, were chosen from a bumper crop of 778 entries, the highest number of entries since the biennial literary contest began in 1993.

Top prize winners in the poetry categories were: Daryl Lim Wei Jie for his collection Histories (English), Yu Yan Chen for Grandmother Says (Chinese), and Govindarajan Elangovan for 300, Mandai Road (Tamil).

Top prize winners for the short story categories were: Teo Yi Han for Tether (English), He Yingshu for Fish Birth (Chinese), and Natarajan Saravanan for Nursed With Sweet Milk… (Tamil).

Mohammad Farihan Bin Bahron bagged both top prizes for Malay, for his poetry collection Forgive Me and short story Zodiac.

The other winners in poetry categories were:

In English: David Wong Hsien Ming (2nd prize), Amanda Chong Wei-Zhen (3rd prize) and Pranav S Joshi (honourable mention).

In Chinese: Yu Miaomiao (2nd prize), Tan Xi Zhe and Zhou Hao (joint 3rd prize), and Joshua Ip and Sing Song Chin (honourable mention).

In Malay: Art Fazil (2nd prize), Wan Jumaiah Bte Mohd Jubri Salim (3rd prize), and Samsudin Bin Said, Herman Rothman and Junaidah Binte Baharawi (honourable mention).

In Tamil: Subha Senthilkumar (2nd prize), and KHM Sathakathulla, Ramesh Raju and Thayumanavan Mathikumar (honourable mention).

Meanwhile, the other winners in the short story categories were:

In English: Sihan Tan (2nd prize), Dora Tan Guek Choo (3rd prize), Jennani Durai (3rd prize and honourable mention), and Bhavani Krishnamurthy and Jane Pek Li Shi (honourable mention).

In Chinese: Yu Yueyan (Liu Chang) (2nd prize), Chen Shuai (3rd prize), and Tan Kah Wai, Song Yixian and Sim Yew Weng (honourable mention).

In Malay: Hajah Halela Binte Abdul Razak (2nd prize), Siti Aisyah Binte Mohamed Salim (3rd prize), Nur Sakinah Binte Mohamed Elyas (3rd prize and honourable mention), and Shaik Mohamed Fazil Musa Sultan (honourable mention).

In Tamil: Rama Suresh (2nd prize), Soundrarajan S/O Jeeva (3rd prize), and Kiruthika Chidambaram, Malarvizhi Elangovan and Vaithiyanathan Natarajan (honourable mention).

The contest is organised by the National Arts Council and managed by The Arts House.

The first prize winners will receive S$4,000 in cash as well as a certificate, a trophy and a S$6,000 “enrichment grant” to further their skills through seminars, workshops and residencies in Singapore or overseas, or for the publication of a solo work.

The second prize winners will receive S$3,000 in cash while third prize winners get S$2,000. Honourable mentions will get S$500.
