SINGAPORE — The National Gallery Singapore will finally open its doors to the public on Nov 24, with visitors enjoying free entry until Dec 6.

A key highlight will be the museum’s opening festival, which will be held at the Padang from Nov 27 to 29. It will feature a show spectacle on the museum’s facade and a range of performances, screenings and other activities.

“The National Gallery team has been hard at work to prepare the artworks and get them ready for display. We will be in for a treat when the Gallery opens its doors in November, with beautiful art to savour and a majestic new space to explore. This will truly be a Jubilee gift we can all enjoy for many years to come,” said Lawrence Wong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth.

Other events during the opening celebrations include tours and talks at the museum’s two permanent galleries, DBS Singapore Art Gallery and UOB Southeast Asia Art Gallery, and the Keppel Centre for Art Education; the launch of the Art Connector, a new sheltered walkway linking the museum to the City Hall MRT station; and panel discussions on Singapore and South-east Asian art.

Said museum chief executive Chong Siak Ching: “As the first museum in the world dedicated to South-east Asian modern art, National Gallery Singapore hopes to captivate and kindle a curiosity for art — from art histories to the stories behind the art, from the discoveries we uncover about South-east Asia and the world to stories about ourselves.”

More events and activities leading to the opening will be announced in the next few months. In the meantime, the museum will be presenting a programme at the Istana Open House on Aug 2, Sunday. The iconic painting National Language Class by Chua Mia Tee will be brought to life through interactive and immersive skits.
