Former MediaCorp Lush 99.5FM radio deejay Kate Reyes has died after a battle with breast cancer. She was 41 years old.

If you were a 98.7fm Perfect 10 listener in the 1990s, then you would be very familiar with the sultry voice of Reyes. Her 14 year stint in the entertainment business also saw her working with other radio stations like Gold90FM and SPH’s Heart 91.3 FM. She rejoined MediaCorp radio as an addition to the Lush team in 2010.

“Kate always had a clear and fierce sense of morality. She was quirky, incredibly intelligent, and had a beautiful heart. She lived with passion and was wholeheartedly giddy about being a mother. My prayers go out to her children and her family,” Gold 90.5FM Vernetta Lopez told TODAY.

MediaCorp Managing Director for Television Bernard Lim, who was Reyes’ programme director back in Perfect 10 remembers her as “ambitious”.

“She always worked hard to get results,” he said. “I lost touch after she left MediaCorp, so this news comes as a shock to me.”

According to a Facebook post by former colleague Claressa Monterio, “radio has lost another star,”

“Kate Reyes has been many things to many people. Funny, irreverent, extremely clever, and completely devoted to her family. To me she was a colleague and during my years on GOLD 90.5FM a friend,” Monterio wrote. “In the last couple of years we drifted out of each other’s lives, she was busy with raising her kids and building her life with a wonderful husband and I was busy battling with my Mother’s illness and eventually her loss. As I come out of mourning after watching my Mum battle so valiantly with her cancer it is heartbreaking to know Kate’s family must now come to terms with the same sorrow and loss. Kate Reyes was many things to many people. I was honoured to know her, privileged to work with her and I am immensely unhappy to say RIP Kate.”

A two day wake has been arranged and the funeral is on Wednesday.
