SINGAPORE — She is one of Singapore’s biggest pop superstars. He is one of Singapore’s biggest rising stars. Together, they’re performing a song by one of Singapore’s biggest names in the Chinese pop scene. We are, of course, talking about Stefanie Sun and Shigga Shay’s contribution to the Sing, Love album project. The song Simply Love penned by Liang Wern Fook, with rap lyrics by Shigga Shay, was released as the final single before the album is officially launched with a concert on July 3.
“Simply Love is a beautifully-written and thought-provoking song on the ideals that Singaporeans strive for,” said Sun in a statement. “It explores the relentless pursuit for perfection especially in a competitive place like Singapore, and brings to mind simple things like love, and showing care and concern for your fellow Singaporean. When I read the lyrics, I was bowled over because (Wern Fook) has such depth.”
Shigga Shay was equally enthusiastic about the collaboration, saying: “It is my honour to be working with veterans like Dr Liang and Stefanie on this meaningful song. I hope that Singaporeans will be able to cherish the people around them more and appreciate this country that we call home.”
The video for the song was shot by Kelvin Tong, who said that the idea for the music video was influenced by the song’s message and events in his own life. “Simply Love is, as its name suggests, a very simple song. It also gave me the idea of basing the music video on a simple weekend afternoon in the lives of a Singaporean family,” he said.
“I think (the video) was quite a challenging concept because it’s (done) as if it was one take from start to finish ... so if anything goes wrong, we have to redo it,” said Sun about the making of the video. “It was a first for me, but Kelvin was very patient and the crew was very professional.”
Shigga added: “Stefanie Sun is one of the few who is really flying the Singapore flag high and making it internationally ... she is like a guobao (national treasure). To be able to hear my voice next to hers, I have to pinch myself.”
Sun and Shigga will join the other musicians who were involved in making Sing, Love — including The Sam Willows, Jeremy Monteiro, Rani Singam, Sezairi Sezali and Charlie Lim — for a concert at The Coliseum at the Hard Rock Hotel in Sentosa to officially launch the album on July 3. The record label Red Roof Records will be giving away tickets for the concert via a song dedication contest on their Dedicate & Win app.
