SINGAPORE - Indie alternative quintet Pleasantry will join fellow Singapore musicians Charlie Lim and Joel Tan (who goes by the stage moniker Gentle Bones) on the second leg of Singapore: Inside Out, the travelling showcase put together by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) to celebrate the coming of age of the island’s creative scene.
The band has been noted for carving out dreamy compositions, which showcase simple lyrical tones offset by the accompaniment of rich instrumentation and varied song structures. They have also won praise for their performances both in Singapore as well as overseas (the band has played in the United States and Canada, among others).
Unlike the Beijing instalment of this programme, the music component in London, under the SGMUSO Live Showcase banner (a collaboration between The Music Society, Singapore (SGMUSO) and STB), will be slightly different. Popular British music establishment Rough Trade UK, will feature the three acts during lunchtime concerts at their Rough Trade East store on June 25, 27 and 28 June. Rough Trade’s Ben Monaghan said they were more than happy presenting music artistes from Singapore and “introducing some refreshing international focus within our own eclectic musical environment”. “By celebrating and encouraging freedom of self-expression and artistic creativity, we hope everyone will enjoy and learn something new,” he added.
As for Pleasantry, the idea of doing the Rough Trade gigs is “a big deal” said the band. “Some of our favourite bands we grew up listening to such as Radiohead and Foals, have played at the legendary store. We never thought we’d ever get the opportunity to be there, much less perform. It’s going to be so incredibly surreal for all of us. In the bigger scheme of things, this opportunity will help us to understand the gigging circuit there and reach out to new listeners in the United Kingdom.”
Meanwhile, the open call for musicians for the third leg of Singapore: Inside Out in New York (from Sep 23 to 27) is still on. The closing date is June 4. For more details, visit http://www.sgmuso.org or SGMUSO’s Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/sgmuso).
Singapore: Inside Out in London runs from June 24 to 28 at Brick Yard Lane.
