Mandopop singer FanFan will be taking a break to care for her twins

SINGAPORE – Taiwanese pop star Christine Fan, or FanFan, may have spent more than 15 years building her singing career, but it has taken her adorable twin sons – Rui Fei and Rui Xiang – only a fraction of that time to become more popular than her.

SINGAPORE – Taiwanese pop star Christine Fan, or FanFan, may have spent more than 15 years building her singing career, but it has taken her adorable twin sons – Rui Fei and Rui Xiang – only a fraction of that time to become more popular than her.

“When I was at the airport, some people pointed at me and said ‘hey, that’s Fei Fei and Xiang Xiang’s mother’. They couldn’t remember my name,” she said over the phone. “It’s okay, as long as people are happy.”

It is no wonder Fei Fei and Xiang Xiang are so popular. Fan, who often shares photos of the one-year-old boys with her 47 million Weibo followers (and three million followers on Facebook), has also written a book about her experiences as a new mother.

Unfortunately, while her sons’ photos and videos often receive hundreds of thousands of likes, the affable singer has also been criticised by some netizens for over-sharing.

“Yes, I did consider whether people want to see (my updates on my children),” she said, but added that her husband, Taiwanese host Blackie Chen. “has been very encouraging”. “We have to live honestly, whether other people approve or not. If we kept paying attention to what other people think of us, it would be too tiring,” she said.

Still, Fan knows she has a lot to be thankful for, even though the sleep-deprived mother said her growing sons present new challenges every single day. It’s a sentiment she expresses in her 10th and latest album, Fanfan’s Time To Give Thanks, which may be her last record for the time being. The 39-year-old said she intends to take an indefinite break from releasing more albums as she contemplates what the next stage of her life will bring.

“I don’t know when (I will release new music), or if I still want to make new albums. But I do want to slow down for a bit and enjoy being a new mother. Everything else will depend on God,” said Fan, who assured her fans that she won’t be leaving the music industry. “I think this album marks the end of one stage of my life quite well, and I think of it as a graduation project. But I won’t disappear, people will still see me and hear from me.”

In the meantime, Fan said she wishes to spend more time at home with her sons, as well as her notoriously playful husband.

“If you have been following our updates on social media, you’ll see that I have three children. My husband is my eldest son and I have two young sons,” she said, laughing. “He’s better now, he doesn’t play tricks on me anymore. He likes to play pranks on my nanny though. I feel very sorry for her, but she seems to enjoy it.”

Fanfan’s Time To Give Thanks is avilable at CD-RAMA and That CD Shop, as well as streaming platforms iTunes, KKBOX and Spotify.
