SINGAPORE — After a long six-year wait, fans of Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza can rejoice: The Malaysian pop singer is set to return to our shores for a solo concert next month.

According to Siti, who staged her last concert here in 2008, there is much fans can look forward to. “In one segment, I’ll be singing some songs from the popular and legendary singers. Currently, I’m also waiting for a confirmation to perform a duet. On top of that, there are also new songs that I will perform,” she said.

Not only that, the songstress will introduce a new story-telling element in the concert. “This is a new performance I did at my charity concert in Kuala Lumpur. One segment will have me singing and story-telling, kind of like Broadway,” said Siti.

The 35-year-old hopes that musical theatre is something she can pursue one day. “I have this plan, an idea to do a musical theatre based on the journey of my life. But I don’t know when I’ll do it. If I have an idea at any time and I have the time or opportunity, I’ll do it.”

We wouldn’t be surprised. Since winning Malaysia’s reality show, Bintang HMI in 1995 (she was only 16), Siti has carved out a career for herself, not just as a singer, but also as a songwriter, record producer, TV personality and actress. She has garnered more than 200 awards, including 23 Anugerah Planet Muzik awards (she was also voted Anugerah Planet Muzik’s Regional Most Popular Artiste 10 consecutive times since 2001).

She has also been listed as one of Malaysia’s richest and most-influential artistes (at one point her album sales alone contributed to 10 per cent of Malaysia’s total album sales) and her success has gained her honorific titles including the “Voice of Asia” and “Asia’s Celine Dion”. Not bad for someone who, as a child, had to help her mother sell home-made kueh in her neighbourhood to supplement the household’s meagre income.

These days, Siti said she was looking forward to new challenges, such as expanding on her English repertoire. Her previous album, the all-English offering, All Your Love released in 2011, sold 70,000 units and she hopes that she can record in English again. “I hope my first English album is not my last. If I can’t record a full album, hopefully I can record one or two English tracks,” she said.

But fans will have to wait for that as she’s also putting the final touches to her new Malay pop album, which is slated to drop in June this year.

“In terms of music, it’s fresh,” said Siti of the new album. “There’s modern pop, which I feel is a new genre in my music and hopefully the listeners will be able to accept it.”

Catch Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza Live in Singapore on April 12, 8pm at The Star Theatre. Tickets at S$198, S$178, S$158, S$128 and S$88 from SISTIC.
