SINGAPORE — The Singapore International Jazz Festival (Sing Jazz) returns for its third edition this weekend, and it is an event that promises to celebrate great jazz music in all variants, styles and forms.
Held over three days at the Event Plaza at Marina Bay Sands, Sing Jazz’s line-up this year features a long list of international and local acts that will entertain both jazz fans and those just looking to have a good time.
Friday’s line-up sees the likes of Australian quartet Hiatus Kaiyote, Canadian band BadBadNotGood and a Singaporean contingent that singer-songwriter Charlie Lim and Darker Than Wax taking the stage. But if that’s too much of a rush for you, then here are some notable acts to check out over the weekend.
***
1. THE GOOD LIFE PROJECT FEAT. VANDETTA (Saturday, 4pm)
They may be young, but Singapore outfit The Good Life Project is fast becoming known for its ability to spread cheer and positive vibes at their live shows, thanks to their feisty performances and a jazz-funk musicality. Another reason not to miss the band’s performance: It is teaming up with local artiste Vandetta (aka Lush 99.5FM’s Vanessa Fernandez), best known for her soulful vocals, for their set.
2. INCOGNITO (Saturday, 7pm)
Incognito must like Singapore very much, because this is the band’s third time at Sing Jazz. Formed in 1980, the British acid jazz band has 16 albums under its belt, and is known for its electrifying stage performances. We don’t know if it is their fans here in Singapore, or our hot weather, or our food that keeps Incognito close to our shores, but one thing is for sure – when the band is on stage, the audience is guaranteed to have a great time.
3. CANDY DULFER (Saturday, 8.30pm)
The Dutch saxophonist Candy Dulfer is no stranger to our shores. The Grammy nominee was mostly self-taught (barring a few music lessons) and rose to fame with high profile collaborations with Dave Stewart and Prince, sold over 2.5 million albums worldwide since, and has had several hits, such as the chart-topping L.A. Citylights, For The Love Of You and Lily Was Here.
4. JOSS STONE (Saturday, 9.45pm)
Joss Stone is certainly one performer to look out for. The award-winning British soul singer debuted at the young age of 16, and went on to achieve both critical and commercial acclaim with her debut album The Soul Sessions. Stone has sold more than 12 million albums to date, with hits like Fell In Love With A Boy, You Had Me and Super Duper Love. Her previous performance at the Esplanade was a sold-out affair, and you can expect that there will be lots of soul at the gig tonight.
5. LEVEL 42 (Sunday, 8.30pm)
Level 42 is a band that needs no introduction. An icon of the 1980s and 1990s music scene, the English pop rock and jazz-funk band was last here in 2011. The band has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, and their hit singles include Lessons In Love, Running In The Family, Something About You and Leaving Me Now.
6. SEUN KUTI & EGYPT 80 (Sunday 9.45pm)
Born in 1983, Seun – he is the son of legendary afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti – first began performing with Egypt 80 when he was nine, playing his father’s songs. After Fela’s death in 1997, Seun stepped up to front the band, and has been leading the celebrated combo as both vocalist and saxophonist ever since.
