SINGAPORE — Leave it to 938LIVE DJ Daniel Martin to come up with the dippiest drinking anecdotes.

“I did get picked up in a bar once, but she had to put me down as I was too heavy,” he quipped.

With a voice like a rich glass of malt whisky, it may seem like an easy feat for him to sit in front of a mic and start babbling away. But there are certain things Martin takes into consideration when it comes to being on the radio.

“Milk and dairy products aren’t great before going on-air, so I stay away from that — and lots and lots of water. I do take a teaspoonful of Manuka honey in the morning (for its) great protective and anti-bacterial properties,” he said. “And honestly, if I’m ill and a little bit phlegmy, I do sound better — deeper tones sound sexier.”

Q: What’s the first drink you tried, how old were you and what were your thoughts on it?

A: It was most likely something I nicked off the Christmas table while no one was looking. Maybe when I was nine or 10? Quick sip, and a wink to Granddad probably.

Q: What’s your most embarrassing experience in picking someone up in a bar?

A: Oh man! There were some epic moments in university in particular. I do recall a bunch of friends being amazed by my ability to have a ‘strategic-upchuck’ on command. That’s where you ‘clear the system’. In hindsight, that’s probably not something I would attempt today. But still, it blew my friends’ minds that I could do that without batting an eyelid.

Q: What’s the drink you’d typically reach for at the end of a long workday?

A: I do love a good full-bodied red wine after a long day. Great for its resveratrol content, which is renowned for being heart healthy! Plus a smooth scotch every now and then.

Q: What is your most memorable food and drink pairing?

A: On the non-alcoholic front: One of the oddest but smoothest combinations I’ve tried was while on holiday in Vietnam. We had an espresso with a raw egg whipped in it. It was the hipster drink of the moment there — and the hidden rooftop cafe some friends took me to was the perfect locale. There I was sipping coffee with egg, and an open roof overlooking the Old Quarter. I would be remiss if I even tried making it myself — I’m afraid I’d make a scrambled espresso.

Q: How about the sexiest pick-up line you’ve heard in a bar?

A: I truly hope people don’t do pick-up lines, because I do think they are quite cheesy. But I have heard a few that are probably too racy to mention here. The worst ones are when someone says what they do and how much they earn. Can you imagine me going, “Hey, I’m Daniel and I’m on Radio or TV ...” Just like every other guy, it’s never the easiest approaching someone in that way. If it has ever happened, it was probably me going off and being myself, and someone responding to it.

Q: Is there a bar or a place that you’d cross oceans just for the food or drinks?

A: I’d cross oceans to get back to Hawaii for a drink. I was an exchange student there in university, and nothing, I repeat, nothing beats a Mai Tai on the North Shore at sunset. In Singapore, I prefer a little bit of music with my drinks, so anywhere with live music is a big plus for me and my mates. I’ve recently discovered Barber Shop by Timbre at the old Arts House. I love the mix of music and ambience there. I’m also a big fan of bespoke cocktail and I love the smoky concoction they whip up for me at Bar Stories at Haji Lane.
