5 questions with Ase Wang

SINGAPORE — One wouldn’t normally imagine actress/model Ase Wang in sneakers and sweatpants, but she is actually very big on streetwear.

“I’m always in sneakers (and) sweatpants,” said the 31-year-old, who is currently the resident judge of reality show SUPERMODELME Femme Fatale, which premieres next Monday.

Q: Has your personal style changed much throughout your years in the entertainment industry?

A: I think it has changed a lot over the years of working in this industry. When I’m working, I like to be in heels and I like to be very feminine and sophisticated, but on my days off, I’m very big on streetwear. I collect a lot of Air Jordans. You know, I’ll (even) be wearing stuff from Supreme. I think one thing that people don’t know is that I opened a barber shop purely for men in Bangkok and the whole concept is streetwear. All my barbers are also dressed in Air Jordans and Supreme hats. We sell streetwear, too.

Q: Have you always been into streetwear?

A: You know what, when I was younger, I would always look at the skater boys and those were the kind of guys that I would always like to date or to look at, you know, with the skateboards, the skater shoes. And I think it kinda just evolved from there. I’ve always been that girl who would rather wear sneakers than Louboutins. Right now, I’m at work (points to her Louboutins) but on a day off, I’m definitely in Air Jordans or Nikes.

Q: Which is your favourite pair of Air Jordan shoes?

A: I have the new white ones, the cement-coloured ones that are quite difficult to get, so I wear those a lot. I had someone order them from me from Los Angeles. They are white and I feel that they are easy to match.

Q: Do you always keep your sneakers in pristine condition?

A: Yes. I have sneaker sprays and I clean them. If you step on my sneakers, I’ll be like: “Did you just step on my white sneakers? I have to go to the bathroom right now.” So I would not be wearing white sneakers in a club. That would not happen!

Q: So what would you wear to the club then?

A: I would probably wear my black sneakers! (Laughs) Or sometimes I’ll wear heels, but I would not be wearing a pair of white sneakers to the club. ZHANG WEIFANG
