Victoria Beckham in “very hot” Singapore to launch her new collection

SINGAPORE — It has taken a while, but Victoria Beckham has definitely shaken off the tag of being a WAG and Posh Spice to become a respected fashion designer in her own right.

In the ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands on Saturday to present a personal selection of her Spring/Summer 2014, Pre-Autumn/Winter 2014 and ICON collections, she acknowledged there have been some lessons along the way since launching her line in 2008. “I’ve learnt that I should always trust my instinct because ultimately, I have to go with what I think is the right thing,” she said. “I can cope with a mistake I made but I think it can be difficult if it was somebody else’s. I do listen to advice but eventually, I make the final decision.”

She also keeps the advice from pal and fellow designer Marc Jacobs close to her heart. “When he found out I was doing a collection, he said to me, ‘Just make sure it’s the best quality.’” She explained that, that way, while people might not like it, nobody would be able to say it isn’t good.

She needn’t have worried. Her first collection was warmly received by critics. Six years on, she has a fashion empire, has had her dresses worn by the likes of Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams and Gwyneth Paltrow and was handed the reins of French Vogue as a guest editor for its last December/January issue.

As one of the most watched women in the world, the mother of four said she keeps her style “deceptively quite simple”. She added: “I pay a lot of attention to the seeming details in dresses and the silhouettes they provide. It is important to focus on the intricacy of the clothing as it impacts the way I carry myself.” Her tip for every woman? Get a tailored jacket as “it is very difficult to find the perfect jacket that complements your body”.

The fashion icon, who tweeted that she found Singapore “very hot”, rued she only has four days here. “Everybody says great things about Singapore and David has told me about many different places and restaurants to visit. I do hope to come back with my family, especially my children.” NAADIAH BADIB

Victoria Beckham’s accessories line will be available from today at the multi-label designer footwear and accessories boutique On Pedder at Scotts Square.
