SINGAPORE — SilkAir, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, launched its inaugural flight to Cairns, Australia over the weekend. The flight, departing from Changi Airport, touched down at Cairns International Airport on Saturday with a customary water cannon salute celebrating the aircraft’s arrival.

Cairns is SilkAir’s second Australian destination after Darwin and it increases the number of destinations in its route network to 49 destinations in 12 countries. Seventeen of these destinations were added in the last five years.

SilkAir will be using its latest Boeing 737-800 aircraft to serve thrice weekly flights to Cairns (Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays). On board, passengers will enjoy a full service experience that includes in-flight meals, baggage allowance of 40kg and 30kg for Business and Economy class, respectively, as well as the airline’s latest wireless in-flight entertainment SilkAir Studio. Movies, television features and music tracks can be wirelessly streamed to customer’s personal devices.

“Cairns is the first new destination for 2015 and is our longest flight route to date. We would like to make it to a daily service in the near future. This new route will also allow us to provide connectivity to travellers from Australia to Singapore and the rest of the world via our joint SilkAir-Singapore Airlines network,” said SilkAir chief executive Leslie Thng.
