Microplastics in our food

SINGAPORE — They are 5mm or smaller and they are everywhere. Microplastics are the remnants of used plastic products and they are increasingly showing up on our shores and in our food.

According to the United Nations, more than eight million tonnes of plastic end up in the oceans every year. By 2050, there will be more plastics than fish in the oceans and an estimated 99 percent of seabirds will have ingested plastic.

Artist Ernest Goh created the Shore Debris Table to raise awareness of microplastics in our food chain by getting members of the public to pick out pieces of plastic from the table.

The installation will be on display from May 6 to 10 at the Keppel Bay Tower.
