SINGAPORE — Close to 10,000 training opportunities will be made available for mid-career employees, on top of the initial more than 10,000 opportunities that have been rolled out by government agency SkillsFuture Singapore since July.

Close to 900 of these opportunities will be in the built environment sector, the agency said in a press release on Thursday (Aug 27).

The training opportunities are part of the SGUnited Skills programme, which caters to mid-career entrants. Close to 700 trainees have enrolled in 40 courses under the programme since July.

Training is conducted full-time and runs for periods ranging from six months to a year.

The opportunities in the built environment sector will become progressively available from this month, SkillsFuture Singapore said.

The training for courses in the built environment sector will be supported by various educational institutions such as the Institute of Technical Education, National University of Singapore and Singapore Polytechnic.

For a start, more than 10 courses in areas such as construction and facilities management and security and environmental services will be offered to mid-careerists.

These courses will prepare trainees for roles such as environmental health and safety specialists, facilities technicians, security officers and building information modelling (BIM) modellers.

In a visit to Singapore Polytechnic on Thursday, Education Minister Lawerence Wong observed a class conducted for the specialist diploma in BIM Management, an SGUnited Skills programme that started earlier this month.

The SGUnited Skills programme offers certifiable courses delivered by Continuing Education and Training Centres, including Institutes of Higher Learning, to allow trainees to acquire industry-relevant skills that can improve their employability.

For the one-year BIM Manangement diploma, it allows trainees to pick up skills such as computational BIM and data analytics.

Trainees will also gain industry experience through workplace attachments or projects with companies. They will also receive career advice and employment assistance during the programme to help them in their job search.

SkillsFuture Singapore said that companies such as real estate group CapitaLand and urban planning consultancy CPG Corporation will be looking to hire from the pool of trainees.
