10th Covid-19 death: 70-year-old man succumbs to infection after battling virus for over a month

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced on Tuesday (April 14) that a 70-year-old Singaporean man died from complications due to Covid-19, succumbing to the coronavirus after more than a month in hospital.

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced on Tuesday (April 14) that a 70-year-old Singaporean man died from complications due to Covid-19, succumbing to the coronavirus after more than a month in hospital.

He is the 10th fatality here, and the third Covid-19 death in four days. A 90-year-old Singaporean man died last Saturday, followed by a 65-year-old Singaporean man on Monday.

The latest fatality — identified as Case 128 — was a family member of Case 125, a 65-year-old Singaporean woman who is linked to the Safra Jurong cluster. The cluster developed after a dinner event on Feb 15 at a restaurant in the club.

The man tested positive for the infection on March 6. The National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) has reached out to his family and is extending help to them, MOH said.

The ministry also said that it has identified a new cluster at PPT Lodge 1A, a foreign workers' dormitory located at 8 Seletar North Link.

In its daily update on the Covid-19 pandemic here, MOH said that another 132 cases of Covid-19 are linked to the cluster at the S11 Dormitory in Punggol, taking the total number of cases there to 718.

BREAKDOWN OF NEW CASES

Earlier on Tuesday, MOH said that there were 334 new cases of Covid-19, taking the total number of confirmed infections in Singapore to 3,252.

Of these, none were imported cases, while 198 cases were linked to known clusters, the majority of them work permit holders staying at dormitories.

Twenty-two cases were linked to other cases, of which 10 are Singaporeans or permanent residents.

MOH said that 114 cases are pending contact tracing. Of these, 24 are Singaporeans or permanent residents, 85 are work permit holders, three are S-Pass holders, one is an employment pass holder, and one is a dependant’s pass holder.

It added that contact tracing and investigation are also underway for cases with no known links yet.

In the past week (April 7 to 13), MOH uncovered links for 342 previously unlinked cases.

CASES FROM THE PUBLIC HEALTHCARE SECTOR

MOH highlighted two more cases — identified as Cases 2738 and 3014 — from the public healthcare sector.

Case 2738

  • A 22-year-old Singaporean woman who has no recent travel history to affected countries or regions. She reported an onset of symptoms on April 12 and tested positive for the coronavirus on April 13.

  • She is hospitalised at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

  • A family member of Cases 2419 and 2739, she is employed as a nurse at the Singapore General Hospital, but had not gone to work since she developed symptoms.

Case 3014

  • A 41-year-old Singaporean man who has no recent travel history to affected countries or regions. He reported an onset of symptoms on April 9 and was diagnosed with Covid-19 on April 13. He is in an isolation room at the NCID. 

  • A doctor at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, he had not gone to work since the onset of symptoms.

UPDATE ON OTHER CASES

To date, 611 patients have fully recovered and have been discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities, including the 25 discharged on Tuesday.

Of the 1,315 confirmed cases who are still in hospital, most are stable or improving.

Twenty-eight patients are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

MOH said that 1,316 cases who are clinically well but still test positive for Covid-19 are being isolated and cared for at community facilities.

Ten patients have died from complications due to the infection, including the 70-year-old man on Tuesday.
