SINGAPORE — Two men died and three others were injured in a five-vehicle accident involving a trailer, lorry and three motorcycles at the Johor-Singapore Causeway early Saturday (June 30).

Videos circulating on social media showed a lorry hurtling across the road divider and into traffic travelling in the opposite direction.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call for help at about 1am along the Woodlands Causeway bridge. Three ambulances and one fire engine were dispatched to the scene.

A 21-year-old motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by SCDF paramedics.

Another 42-year-old motorcyclist, who was conveyed unconscious to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), succumbed to his injuries there later, said the police.

Of the three who were hurt, two of them — a 23-year-old lorry driver and a 37-year-old motorcyclist —were taken conscious to KTPH. The third man received minor abrasions and refused to be taken to the hospital.

A 30-year-old trailer driver was arrested for suspected drink driving, while the injured lorry driver was arrested for causing death by a rash act. Police investigations are ongoing.

TODAY understands that all the men are Malaysian, except the 42-year-old motorcyclist who died in hospital.

At about 2.30am, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said in a Facebook post that the departure lanes were closed temporarily due to a traffic accident, and advised travellers to use the Tuas Checkpoint.

At 8am, they said in an update that all the lanes had reopened and that operations at the Woodlands Checkpoint had resumed.

As of 4.50pm on Saturday, the Checkpoint.SG website showed that it would take about 82 to 112 minutes to get to Johor Baru through the Causeway, with heavy traffic in both directions.
