SINGAPORE — Two men in sports cars who raced each other at twice the speed limit on the Central Expressway (CTE) and clocked about 180km/h were each jailed two weeks on Wednesday (May 22).

Allan Chia Chee Shin, 39, and Ng Chee Yong, 27, were also disqualified from holding or getting all classes of driving licences for four years.

They pleaded guilty in the State Courts to one count each of rash driving, which carries a maximum punishment of a year behind bars and a S$5,000 fine.

The court heard that on Oct 13, 2018, Chia and Ng — who drove Mitsubishi Evolution 10s — met up with a motorcar group at Loyang Tua Pek Kong Temple at 11.30pm. There were 10 to 15 men present at the gathering.

About half an hour later, both of them agreed to another driver’s suggestion to go “rounding” — or to drive around — with East Coast Park as the end point.

As they drove along the CTE in the direction of Ayer Rajah Expressway, between Yio Chu Kang Road and Braddell Road, Chia and Ng decided to “play” with each other.

They swerved in and out of lanes as they raced each other, overtaking several other cars, including taxis.

This was all captured on the front-facing in-car camera of Chia’s car.

At about 12.50am, a traffic police officer saw them speeding and used a laser gun to clock Chia going at 178km/h. He also caught Ng speeding at 184km/h, when the speed limit was 90km/h.

The police officer then stopped Chia’s car before the exit at Balestier Road, where he admitted to his offence.

Ng’s car was spotted later at East Coast Park at about 3am, and he admitted that he had gone to the McDonald’s outlet there earlier to meet his friends for supper. He was arrested at his home after further investigations.
