SINGAPORE — About 20 people were evacuated after a fire erupted at Sim Lim Square mall on Tuesday (Nov 28) morning.

In response to TODAY’s queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it was alerted to a fire at 1 Rochor Canal Road at about 10.55am.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

“Following SCDF’s arrival, the fire, which involved contents of a kitchen on the second floor, was observed to have been extinguished by the sprinkler system,” SCDF added.

Audio-visual equipment shop Zeppelin & Co, a tenant at Sim Lim Square, posted video clips on its Instagram page, showing SCDF emergency vehicles parked outside of the mall during the incident.

In one of the clips, groups of people are also seen standing outside the building following the evacuation.

Mr Thomas Lee of Lee and Lee Electronics on the second floor or Sim Lim Square told TODAY that three of his shop staff arrived at the mall at 11.30am, but were denied entry into the building as the fire was being put out by SCDF officers.

They were allowed to enter the mall — which is known for predominantly selling information technology goods and electronics — about an hour later.

“Since there is still some burnt smell inside the mall, we decided not to open the shop today, and maybe tomorrow,” Mr Lee said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
