SINGAPORE — Some 2,500 needy households in Singapore are set to get a nutritional boost from an egg distribution programme by welfare organisation Food from the Heart (FFTH), which will distribute 300,000 eggs over the next 12 months.
Of the 2,500 households, 1,700 households have an average of three family members, and 800 have elderly residing on their own.
Launched on Saturday (May 6) at an “egg carnival” at Hotel Jen at Orchardgateway, this programme will see each household receive one tray of eggs per month. Households with more than four family members will receive two trays of eggs.
The programme, funded by OCBC Bank under its #OCBCCares Programme, will start this month and continue until April 2018.
FFTH partners local grassroots groups and volunteers to reach out to families that require support.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Desmond Lee, who was at the launch where 120 beneficiaries from Marine Parade and Jurong were served a hearty breakfast that included eggs cooked in various ways, said that this approach of private sector companies like OCBC working with welfare organisations like FFTH was a sensible one.
Working with the local Social Services Office would ensure that there was no excessive help given to some particular needy persons on the one hand, and no neglect of families on the other hand, ensuring a spread of support to all households that need support, Mr Lee, who is also a Member of Parliament for Jurong GRC, added.
“So we now have many helping hands working in unison. This kind of approach is what Singapore needs,” he said, adding that with many good-hearted individuals and companies willing to help, it is important that their efforts reach out as deep into the community as possible.
