Two-and-a-half years’ jail, fine for man who had sex with 13-year-old girl

SINGAPORE — He was 21 and she was 13 when they first got to know each other through an online game in late 2014.

The two continued to chat over Facebook and WhatsApp, and as their relationship developed, he asked her to be his girlfriend. While she was initially reluctant because of the age gap between them, she eventually relented.

He went on to have sex with her on several occasions, and once even tried to kiss the girl’s 11-year-old sister.

On Thursday (April 11), the man was sentenced to two-and-a-half years' jail and fined S$15,000, after pleading guilty to two counts of sexual penetration of a minor and one count of outraging a minor’s modesty. He will have to serve a 14-month jail term if he is unable to pay the fine.

WHAT THE MAN DID

Sometime in July 2015, the man, who cannot be named to protect the girl’s identity, went with her to Jurong West Sports and Recreation Centre after she had finished school. He then took her to a handicapped toilet on the sixth floor and asked her to go in there with him.

She declined at first, but gave in after she saw that he was getting angry.

In the toilet, the man told the girl, who was then a virgin, that he wanted to have sex with her, but she refused and tried to stop him from lifting up her shirt.

However, to avoid disappointing him, she undressed herself and went on to have sex with him. The court heard that she had felt embarrassed and had covered herself with her school bag while they were having sex.

The two went on to have sex on several other occasions. He also asked her to send him nude pictures of herself, which she did.

In September 2015, the girl went to his house with her younger sister who was 11 at that time. While there, the man took the younger sister into his bedroom and tried to kiss her on the lips. The younger girl resisted by shutting her mouth tightly. The court heard that she had felt disgusted after the incident.

Later that year, the girl decided to end her relationship with the man as she felt that he was only using her for sex.

His offences came to light only after her mother confronted the girl about the man.

Apart from the sexual penetration and outrage of modesty charges, the man also pleaded guilty to five charges under the Tobacco Act (Control of Advertisements and Sale Act) for selling e-cigarettes online. Thirteen other similar charges were taken into consideration.
