SINGAPORE — A 32-year-old man has been charged on Wednesday (April 18) with the assault of Jurong GRC Member of Parliament Tan Wu Meng during his regular Meet-the-People session (MPS).

Mohammed Ameen Mohamed Maideen, 32, faces one count of criminal trespass and another count of voluntarily causing hurt to Dr Tan, who suffered bruises on his arm and abrasions on his neck.

According to the charge sheets, Ameen reportedly grabbed the MP forcefully around his neck and slammed him backwards against the wall before punching him on the body multiple times.

If convicted of criminal trespass, Ameen may be jailed for up to three months, or fined up to $1,500, or both. For voluntarily causing hurt, he could be jailed for up to two years, or slapped with a fine of $5,000, or both, if convicted.

The alleged assault took place around 10pm on Monday at Block 334 Clementi Avenue 2, where Dr Tan holds his MPS.

Ameen was said to have rushed into the open area of the MPS where Dr Tan was speaking with another resident, and started hitting the MP with his fists.

Dr Tan told TODAY on Tuesday that the assailant was not a familiar face at his MPS, but records showed that the man had sought his help for a case around mid-2017. The MP declined to discuss the case, citing confidentiality reasons.

Ameen will be remanded for two weeks for psychiatric observation at the Institute of Mental Health. His case will be heard again on May 10.
