SINGAPORE — A 45-year-old trailer lorry driver was arrested on Monday (Jan 18) after goods on his trailer apparently hit a flyover above the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), resulting in traffic congestion.
The police said they were alerted to the accident along the AYE towards the Marina Coastal Expressway at about 7am. No injuries were reported, they added.
The man was arrested for collision of heavy motor vehicle and public buildings or structures and driving a heavy motor vehicle with a height exceeding 4.5m without an escort, the police said.
Investigations are ongoing.
In videos shared on social media, the goods on the trailer appear to hit the top of the 4.5m Clementi flyover above the AYE.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) first reported the accident on its Twitter page at 7.09am, telling motorists to avoid lane three.
At 1.09 pm, LTA tweeted that the accident had caused congestion on the AYE until the Jurong Town Hall exit.
“The AYE was closed after the Clementi Ave 2 exit,” LTA said.
Later at 2.39pm, LTA told motorists to avoid lanes one, two and three.
TODAY understands that the AYE was fully reopened at about 5.30pm.
Responding to TODAY’s queries, LTA said that it has conducted inspections of the Clementi flyover and has determined that its structural integrity is not compromised and that the flyover remains safe for use.
A check by TODAY at 6.35pm on Google Maps showed that traffic has since cleared up.
