SINGAPORE — By 2017, the Ministry of Education (MOE) expects the number of schools offering the Science, Technology, Engineering Mathematics Applied Learning Programme (STEM ALP) to grow to half of the 124 mainstream schools, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat announced today (Sept 2) during a visit to Greendale Secondary.

There are currently 42 secondary schools offering STEM ALP, according to the MOE.

The programme aims to provide learning opportunities for students to acquire and apply their knowledge and skills on STEM. Students will also be given early exposure to STEM-related applied learning and careers.

In last year’s Workplan Seminar, Mr Heng announced that the MOE will work with each school to provide the necessary support to build on secondary schools’ existing niche programmes through the introduction of ALP.

To support schools in developing and implementing quality STEM ALPs, the Ministry of Education has partnered STEM Inc, a newly-established unit under the Science Centre Singapore comprising about 50 personnel with industry experience who will work with teachers to develop programmes.
