SMRT staff injured while carrying out track maintenance near Joo Koon station; train start delayed

SINGAPORE — An accident during track maintenance on the East-West Line (EWL) delayed the start of train services by almost an hour between Gul Circle and Boon Lay MRT stations early Wednesday (Dec 12) morning.

SINGAPORE — An SMRT staff was injured while carrying out track maintenance work on the East-West Line (EWL) early Wednesday (Dec 12) morning, which led to the start of train services between Gul Circle and Boon Lay MRT stations being delayed by almost an hour.

The maintenance staff member, who was on the track, injured his right foot while preparing for an engineering vehicle to return to the depot.

The accident happened near Joo Koon MRT station at 4.10am while SMRT staff were carrying out maintenance works.

Train services, which usually start from about 5.30am, started at 6.22am, SMRT said.

"After our staff was conveyed to hospital, our engineering and operations teams conducted further checks on the track before service between Gul Circle and Boon Lay MRT stations was able to start at 6.20am," SMRT added.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that were they alerted to the incident at 4.20am, and the SMRT staff was conveyed to the National University Hospital.

The train operator said the staff member is currently in stable condition and undergoing treatment at the hospital. "Workplace safety is a priority for us, and we will be carrying a full investigation into the accident," SMRT said.

A safety timeout was observed by its maintenance teams this morning, the train operator added.

The incident was first announced by SMRT in a tweet at 4.59am, before the first train service was due to start.

Free regular and bridging bus services were provided for the four affected stations.
