SINGAPORE — The latest Town Council Management Report (TCMR) had banded the opposition-run Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council (AHPETC) red for service and conservancy charges (S&CC) arrears management.

In response, AHPETC today (Nov 21) said it is monitoring the situation closely and has initiated several steps to recover the outstanding arrears since last year.

Workers’ Party (WP) Chairman Sylvia Lim said the Town Council has stepped up enforcement measures including court prosecution, where other measures have failed. It is processing the arrears cases in batches.

She added that while some residents can settle their arrears within a short period of time, others may need more time, and the Town Council assisted them with instalment plans.

She said improving the arrears situation is an ongoing process and will take time.

As for the “pending” remark for corporate governance, Ms Lim said it is mainly because auditors are still in the midst of finalising the FY12 financial statements.

Issues being addressed include complexities resulting from the handover legacy, classification and treatment issues, year-end adjustments and others.

Ms Lim said the auditors were appointed in early May this year, and the Town Council hopes the audit will be completed soon.

The Town Council also notes that the Ministry of National Development has rated it comparably with other town councils, in the areas of estate cleanliness, estate maintenance and lift performance.

The council said that going forward, it will continue to work hard to provide a pleasant living environment for its residents. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
