SINGAPORE — After a long-anticipated wait, Singapore’s first Apple store will finally open for business on May 27 at 10am along Orchard Road.

The opening date was announced late Tuesday night (May 16) in a notice pasted outside the tech giant's upcoming store at Knightsbridge Mall. This came two weeks after the store’s name — Apple Orchard Road — was revealed.

Plans for the Apple store at Orchard Road, South-east Asia’s first, were leaked nearly a year and a half ago. In October 2015, a former tenant at the mall, Pure Fitness, informed its members saying it was closing down in order to make way for Apple.

Several events have been arranged for Apple Orchard Road's opening. Local singer Sezairi, for instance, will be performing at the store from 5pm to 6.30pm on May 27.

Local photographers, film makers, musicians, illustrators, developers and entrepreneurs will also be conducting a series of educational sessions at the store once it is open. This will come under the Today at Apple programme which launched worldwide on Wednesday.

On May 28, photographer Chia Aik Beng will be holding a session about street photography in Singapore from 11am to 12.30pm. There will also be a session for kids on movie making on May 31 from 10am to 11am. Available sessions can be found at https://www.apple.com/sg/today/.

In November 2015, Singapore-based solar energy provider Sunseap Group said it was providing Apple’s operations in Singapore — including the Apple Orchard Road store — with 100 per cent clean energy using rooftop solar installations. Apple’s current corporate office at One North is also entirely powered by solar energy, making the company the first in Singapore to run exclusively on renewable energy
