Authorities probe gastroenteritis outbreak at Paya Lebar preschool after 106 children reported symptoms

SINGAPORE — More than 100 children from a preschool in Paya Lebar reported gastroenteritis symptoms in April, with a child having to be hospitalised.

SINGAPORE — More than 100 children from a preschool in Paya Lebar reported gastroenteritis symptoms in April, with a child having to be hospitalised.

The child has since been discharged and the matter is under investigation, said the Ministry of Health (MOH), Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) and Singapore Food Agency (SFA) in a joint statement.

In all, a total of 106 children at the Superland Pre-school at the Singpost Centre were reported to have developed symptoms of gastroenteritis as of Sunday.

“All affected children have recovered and the majority of them have returned to the preschool,” the agencies said.

The outbreak was first reported on Tuesday by The Straits Times, which added that the preschool had first sent out an alert on April 9 to parents of a possible “acute gastroenteritis situation”.

Gastroenteritis, which is commonly associated with food poisoning or “stomach flu”, is the inflammation of the stomach or the intestines, with sufferers having symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting.

ECDA said on Tuesday that it is monitoring the situation and is working with the preschool operator to ensure the well-being of the children and staff.

TODAY has reached out to the pre-school for comments.

Just last week, a total of 151 students and staff members at the International French School have fallen ill with food poisoning.

And in March, a total of 43 Temasek Junior College staff members fell ill with gastroenteritis symptoms after consuming food prepared by Chilli Api Catering. Of these, eight people had been hospitalised.
